When I talked to friends about my trip to Bali, a lot of them asked me if I had planned a stopover on one of the three Gili islands. My friends I had planned to visit on Bali then asked me if I wanted to stay with them on Gili Air for a couple of days. We took a small van from Canggu to Sanu and a speed boat for the rest of the journey.
In case you become seasick easily, you should cancel your breakfast, because the passage can become pretty rough. After arriving on Gili Air, we walked to our hotel. The island is so small – it’s possible to explore it by foot. If you are interested in discovering the reefs around the island, there are several offers for diving professionals and for beginners. Each resort has its own pool, where you have the chance to do the first diving steps. Otherwise you can do it the way I did, lend a pair of diving goggles and discover the reefs on your own.
Because of the hot weather, we walked straight to our hotel and back to the beach, to jump into the water. I was pretty surprised that the three islands lay so close to each other that we were able to see the beaches of Gili Trawangan. For dinner you should try out one of the small bars, located in front of the beach. There you have the chance to pick the fish you want to eat, right before it’s cooked for you. Never accept the first price, but try to use your negotiating skills. Thanks to Julia, Sarah, Markus and Chris for wonderful 4 days on Gili Air.
